I have a passion for assisting children and adults with developmental disabilities due to being an older sibling of two with disabilities and proud parent of a special needs child with Asperger's and ADHD. For over 10 years I have been researching, practicing, and performing specialized tasks to help my child achieve and enhance his instructional and social objectives. As a Special Education Assistant for a public school over three years and, mixed middle/elementary for the last two years, I have assisted special population students with achieving established goals, practicing activities, and repetitions as developed by teacher, therapist or pathologist. Also, I helped students with mobility needs; assisting with loading and unloading buses, breakfast, lunch, snack, clean-up, lavatory, clothing, personal hygiene, and wash-up routines. I also spent a summer providing assistance to students who have complex health needs and was a live- in at a residential hospital facility. In the summer I provide support to students in a therapeutic recreation program. In addition I have one year of experience providing direct support to adults with developmental disabilities living in the community to help facilitate their goals for living independent, full lives.
