I worked with the speech and memory of my Father-in-Law using flash cards, games and books. We also did chair exercises for his fingers, hands, arms, feet, and legs. After two years his dementia became too advanced but we still continued with games. I took him on outings at least three times a week. I dressed, bathed, toileted and fed him every day. grew a very loving relationship and trusted each other with walking and standing. Eventually he could no longer move and I was able to get him around the house with his Hoya Lift and his big hospice chair. Even though he was never able to communicate well due to his stroke we learned how to have fun conversations with the use of paper and pens. 20 years ago I worked at an Assisted Living Center where I conducted the exercises, current events, social fun - like games and dances, and also organized the daily outings. In my college days I was a live-in caregiver for a young quadriplegic woman including range of motion exercises.
