I come from a large family with 7 children and an extensive family network with 24 cousins younger than myself. As one of the eldest I was constantly charged with watching my younger siblings as well as younger cousins when our family got together. I would be responsible of anywhere from 1-15 kids, ages from 6 months to 12 years old. If I had more than 5 of them I usually had one of my younger sisters or cousins help out as well. I started seriously babysitting for other families when I was 13. I babysat for the McKennas with 4 boys, triplets who were 3 when I started and an older boy who was 5. I worked for the family consistently until the triplets were 11; at which point I moved away for college. I did everything from after-school care to morning routine to camp or activity drop-off/pick-up, to Read more dinner and late night care. The other consistent family I sat for at the time had two children, a 6 month old girl and a 2 year old boy. I sat for them consistently for about 3 years. I am currently First Aid & CPR certified by the American Red Cross as my last job required it for sea-deployment. I took the babysitter training course in high school and was certified in CPR and other basics. I know how to bandage and wrap various injuries from playing sports in high school and dealing with numerous active or work-related injuries (both mine and others'). I'm caring, respectful, adventurous, and I love kids. I'm very active and imaginative which is something they identify with. However, I'm not a pushover. The family with two kids that I sat for had extremely mis-behaved children as they bounced from nanny-nanny with very little parent interaction. In my time with them I was able to make serious progress with both children in behavior and communication. I think many children just need someone willing to take the time to be patient, hear them out, and explain things to them (repeatedly); rather than saying this is the way things are. Kids are generally pretty reasonable; IF you appeal to what they want and what they can understand/identify with based on their age level. I've done a lot of psychology study in school, including developmental psychology, and I think it really improved my communication with children. I'm a 25 year old environmental scientist. I'm running around outside in the woods and streams for fun anyways, it's even more fun to bring some kids along who enjoy it as much as I do.
